UMPIRING
Learn the game. Build confidence. Be part of the action.
Umpiring is a great way to stay involved in netball while developing your knowledge of the game and valuable skills such as communication, confidence, resilience and leadership.
Players can start umpiring from the year they turn 12, with Willoughby United providing coaching, mentoring and support to help new umpires get started. Our club relies on our umpires to support our teams each week, and we offer opportunities to develop and progress through the Northern Suburbs Netball Association umpiring pathway.
All umpires must hold a current Netball Rules of Theory Examination pass, valid for four years. The examination can be completed through Netball Australia's online learning platform.
Umpires are paid based on their level of accreditation and experience, making umpiring a rewarding way to develop your skills while earning money and staying connected to the game.
New Umpires
Ready to give umpiring a go?
Players can start umpiring for Willoughby United from the year they turn 12, with age determined as at 31 December.
All new umpires must successfully complete the Rules of Netball Theory Examination, an online assessment covering the fundamental rules of the game. A pass mark of 70% or above is required, with a certificate provided upon successful completion.
Our umpiring development follows the Netball Australia National Umpire Development Framework, with support and opportunities to progress as your experience and confidence grow.

Umpire Courses & Development
Keep learning. Keep developing.
Northern Suburbs Netball Association (NSNA) offers a range of umpiring courses, clinics and development pathways to help umpires build their skills and confidence.
We encourage all new umpires to attend the Red Robin Umpiring Clinics at NSNA at the beginning of the season. These sessions are a great opportunity to learn, gain practical experience and connect with other developing umpires.
NetSetGO Umpiring
Get involved and be part of your child’s netball journey!
We encourage NetSetGO parents to get involved with umpiring. Parent umpires play an important role in helping young players learn the game and develop their skills in a fun and supportive environment.
No prior umpiring experience is needed — Willoughby United provides the training and support you need to get started. It’s a great way to support your child and enjoy being part of their first steps in netball.
